Crochet Afghan Fun!

This page is all about crochet afghan fun, because making gorgeous crochet afghans is a lot of fun.  Yes, it requires patience and diligence, but in no time at all, you will experience your own rewarding crochet afghan fun.

Most crochet afghan stitches begin with the Granny Square.  If you aren't familiar with the Granny Square, here are some simple directions to create a basic Granny Square.   Although there are numerous patterns available for creating the Granny Square, you will discover that all of them will enhance your Crochet Afghan fun.

Basic Granny Square

Round 1. Begin by chaining four stitches and join with a slip stitch to create a ring.

Round 2: Chain three, two more double crochet in ring.  This creates three double crochet.

Chain one. Three double crochet, chain one, until you have four (3dc) and four (ch 1 spaces).

Join final chain one with beginning of chain three with a slip stitch to finish round.

Round 3: slip stitch in top of next two double crochet.  Chain three (counts as first double

crochet throughout pattern)2 double crochet in chain one space, chain three, 3 double crochet in same space.

(This creates your corner)

chain 3, 3 double crochet in next ch1 space. Chain three, three double crochet in same space (this creates the second corner).

Repeat two more times until you have a square complete with four corners.  Join with top of first Double crochet with a slip stitch.

Round 4: slip stitch in top of next two double crochet.

You will now be working in the chain three space in the midst of your first corner.

The pattern will be to work each corner as three double crochet, three chain, three double crochet.

You will continue to chain three and then work three double crochet in each chain three space between corners.

You will notice that each round will increase the amount of chain three spaces between corners.

You can finish off your square or continue to make your square as large as you like.
I have created a number of crochet afghan projects by simply creating one giant granny square.  There are also some great books on crochet afghan fun at the Fun Crochet Store.
