Crochet Baby AfghansIt seems that as soon as we hear the new announcement of a baby soon to be born, crafters everywhere begin to decide what they should make in honor of the occasion. I know, as a crochet enthusiast, visions of baby booties, bonnets, hats, and layettes dance in my head. However, there is one item that all crocheters (as well as knitters) can agree that every newborn needs, baby afghans! There are a number of different stitches one can use to crochet baby afghans, stemming from rows upon rows of single crochet, to granny squares joined together, or the classic ripple stitch crochet baby afghan (a favorite of many). I have gathered together a number of different crochet baby afghan patterns that use various stitches and techniques to make gorgeous baby afghans. The first stitch in particular that I want to mention is the Ripple Stitch. I want to begin with this one, because it is one of the stitches I have personally always associated with baby afghans. I am including a You Tube instructional crochet video on how to make the Ripple Stitch. The tutorial is easy to understand, and once you understand this stitch, you may find that you really enjoy making Ripple Stitch afghans. Here is the video: I recommend that you practice making the ripple stitch (the trickiest part of the Ripple Stitch is figuring out how many you need for your project), and then trying some of the baby afghan patterns. She gives a great tip in the tutorial that helps solve the frustration of the Ripple Stitch. After you have created your chain and begun your Ripple Stitch row, if you have any extra chains, simply pull them out and weave in the ends. This is a great tip for those of us who are a bit mathematically challenged when it comes to determining the length we need!
